Testing Pulang for a Modern Web Design Project

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store selling handmade jewelry, and the first thing I needed to decide was the right typeface. The brand had a distinct personality—elegant yet approachable—and I knew the font would play a huge role in shaping that visual identity. After some research and testing, I landed on Pulang, a modern and fancy display font that caught my eye for its clean lines and subtle elegance.

Pulang has a unique character. It’s not overly ornate like a script font, nor is it too minimal like a sans serif. It strikes a balance between sophistication and readability. Its curves are smooth, and the spacing feels intentional, making it ideal for headlines or logos where you want to stand out without overwhelming the viewer.

One of the first places I tested Pulang was in the hero section of the website. The headline read “Handcrafted with Love,” and I placed it over a soft background image of a handcrafted necklace. The contrast between the bold, slightly curved letters and the warm tones of the photo worked well. It didn’t feel forced—it felt natural, like an extension of the design itself.

When it came to mobile responsiveness, I made sure to check how Pulang rendered on smaller screens. I noticed that at smaller sizes, the font still maintained its clarity, which is essential for a good user experience. I adjusted the font size slightly to ensure it remained legible on all devices without sacrificing the aesthetic.

For the rest of the site, I paired Pulang with a simple sans serif font like Montserrat for body copy. This combination helped maintain visual hierarchy while keeping the content easy to scan. The decorative nature of Pulang was reserved for headers, call-to-action buttons, and promotional banners, allowing it to serve as a focal point rather than a distraction.

I also considered how Pulang could be used in other parts of the site. For instance, I applied it to the navigation menu labels, but only in the main header. It added a touch of personality without confusing the user. In the product sections, I used it sparingly for titles and featured collections, ensuring the overall layout stayed balanced and professional.

Another consideration was the font’s availability and performance. Since Pulang is a freebie, I checked if it was optimized for web use. It came with standard webfont formats, and I didn’t encounter any loading issues. I also confirmed that it supported the necessary characters for the store’s language and didn’t have any licensing restrictions that might affect client projects.

As I continued building the site, I experimented with different weights and alternates. The font had a few variations that allowed me to adjust the tone of the text depending on the context. For example, a lighter weight version worked well for secondary headings, while the regular weight was perfect for primary calls to action.

One thing I noticed about Pulang was its versatility. It wasn’t limited to just the homepage. I used it in blog headers, email templates, and even social media graphics. The consistency across platforms helped reinforce the brand’s identity and made the design feel more cohesive.

When it comes to readability, I found that Pulang performed best when used for short phrases and titles. It wasn’t ideal for long paragraphs, which is typical for display fonts. However, since the store focused more on visuals and product showcases, this wasn’t an issue. I made sure to keep the body text clear and straightforward, using Pulang only where it added value.

Font pairing is always a delicate process, and Pulang made it easier by being complementary to simpler fonts. I tried a few combinations, but the one with Montserrat stood out the most. It created a nice contrast without clashing, which is crucial for maintaining a polished look.

In the end, Pulang became a key element of the brand’s visual language. It helped convey the store’s personality and made the site feel more inviting and professional. As a designer, I appreciate how a well-chosen font can elevate a project and make a lasting impression on users.

If you’re looking for a display font that’s both stylish and functional, Pulang is worth considering. Whether you’re designing a landing page, a portfolio, or a digital brand kit, it offers a modern solution that can enhance your typography choices without compromising usability.
